Hey everyone 👋

My name is Richard Hillyer, otherwise known as ‘The Guitar Coach.’ 

I’ve been playing guitar since the age of eight when I was gifted my first ever guitar for my birthday. I was inspired on a family holiday in Menorca after watching a Spanish guitarist perform and I have been hooked ever since.

Live Performance

I started gigging at the age of nine playing The Shadows and Buddy Holly back catalogue at retirement homes, pubs and clubs. On a few occasions not being allowed in due to my age, even though I was booked to perform at the venues. I have been lucky enough to perform at big events such as The ICC Cricket World Cup, performing to over 20,000 cricket fans. 

I continue to perform live and manage a wedding and events band called Freeze. I also provide session guitar to artists and perform regularly for other bands. 

Simply The Best

I have been lucky enough to receive some expert tuition throughout my guitar playing career from guitarists who have played with the likes of Brian May, Hank Marvin, Michael Jackson, Tears for Fears, Jessie J, & Guthrie Govan to name just a few. I have obtained vital information from the masters about their approach to playing the guitar and I have crafted my own sound and presence on the guitar with what I have learnt. 

I studied guitar at Degree level from BIMM Bristol, where I obtained a BA Honours in Professional Musicianship. I also studied at Filton College where I received both a National & Professional Diploma in Music Performance.

The Next Generation 

It has always been important to me to share the secrets of the greats with upcoming guitarists. That is what I am passionate about doing here at ‘The Guitar Coach HQ.’ I have taught students in the UK, America & Canada.
